Botanical name: Salvia hispanica
Chia is a small, oval, brown seed. The musilaginous Chia absorbs up to twelve times its weight in water, providing a gel-like substances that can be substituted for oil or fat in recipes. They deliver a massive amount of nutrients, have very few calories, almost all the carbohydrates are fibre, they are loaded with antioxidant and are high in omega-3 fatty acids. They may improve certain blood markers, which have been known to lower the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Nutritional Value: Fibre, Protein, Calcium, Manganese, Magnesium, Phosphorus. They also contain a fair amount of Zinc, Vitamin B3 (Niacin), Potassium, Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) and Vitamin B2.
Germination: Not applicable. This seed is included in our range for it's flavour and health benefits. Mucilaginous seeds can be grown as microgreens without soaking first. Spread seeds on growing medium such as coir, and keep moist by spraying gently.
